See the story of Stella Liebeck, the “little old lady” famous for the “McDonald’s coffee lawsuit”

Stella Liebeck

Who is (was) Stella Liebeck?

She was  the “little old lady” famous for the “McDonald’s coffee lawsuit.”

Stella Liebeck became the face of every newspaper and TV broadcast for suing McDonald’s after spilling coffee on herself and being scalded.

Many see the story as an old woman trying to get rich quickly by spilling coffee on herself and suing the company for it. This version is slightly over the top and not a true depiction of what happened.

Stella Liebeck

The facts in the “McDonald’s coffee lawsuit.”

Most restaurants serve their coffee between 160-170 degrees Farenheit but McDonald’s believes in going beyond that and serving theirs at a temperature that is about 20 degrees hotter than these normal ones. Even though they have had claims from more than 700 people about their temperature and the burns that people have obtained from it, they still choose not to lower the temperature.

Stella Liebeck

We might all look at this as though this lady made a huge deal out of nothing, but Stella Liebeck suffered the most serious kind of burns to her thighs and sensitive areas and had to be rushed to the ER to treat her shock. Here she faced numerous days in hospital and many very painful skin grafting procedures while still facing permanent scarring and a hospital bill of over $10 000.

Not wanting more than just compensation for her huge hospital bill, Stella Liebeck was forced to sue when McDonald’s stated that her claims were extreme and that they would pay only a tenth of it.

Stella Liebeck went to court with her case and although she was offered a great amount for her injuries and punitive damages ($200,000), she was at fault in some way so the judge offered her a slightly lesser amount ($160,000 ) and eventually after appeals were made and amounts changed, this case was settled for an amount unknown to the public.

The jury also awarded another $2.7 million in punitive damages against McDonald’s because they knew their coffee was too hot and they served it like that anyway despite the numerous complains because it “tasted better.”

The Stunning Fukang Meteorite – Literally Out of This World

fukang meteorite

The Fukang meteorite was found in the mountains near Fukang, China in 2000. It is a pallasite—a type of stony–iron meteorite with olivine crystals. It is believed to be some 4.5 billion years old, which is as ancient as Earth itself

Pallasites are extremely rare even among meteorites (only about 1% of all meteorites are this type) and Fukang has been hailed as one of the greatest meteorite discoveries of the 21st century.

It’s a spectacular meteorite, and possibly the most astounding extraterrestrial piece of rock man has ever seen.

An anonymous group of collectors currently holds the largest portion which weighs 419.5 kg (925 pounds). In 2008 they attempted to sell it at auction at Bonham’s in New York for approximately $2 million but did not receive any bidders.

14 Types of noses, apparently not all noses are equal

Not all noses are equal.  This is a sad truth for many people.  In the vast array of noses in the world, there are obvious favourites.  But what is the ideal nose?

To figure this out we need to know how many different types of noses there are.  While guesses may range anywhere from 5 to 500, an Israeli scientist named Abraham Tamir stated that there is only 14.

How did he come to decide on 14 types of noses?  Tamir gathered together roughly 1,800 pictures of different types of noses; some were artwork but most were actual photos of people from Israel, Holland, France, and Belgium.

Now, before we discuss the results, perhaps you’re wondering why such an investigation was necessary.  Being a scientist, the simple fact that no one had done it before was enough to motivate him.

The 14 types of noses found by Abraham Tamir

Beyond just analysing different types of noses, Tamir stated that different noses could mean different things about the individual’s personality.  For example, the snub shaped nose, while it is considered one of the most attractive noses (found on the famous footballer, Wayne Rooney), Professor Tamir states that such a nose often denotes a lack of maturity, both spiritually and physically.

Another type of nose, which is actually the most common, particularly for men, is the fleshy nose.  Almost 1/4th of the faces Tamir examined had this type of nose.  A good example of this type of nose can be seen on Prince Philip.  Professor Tamir also links certain types of behaviours to the owners of these noses.  He states that people with the fleshy nose tend to be much more helpful and sensitive, looking for areas where they can assist others.

But sadly not everyone can have what are considered attractive noses.  Professor Tamir said that some of the most unattractive noses are the fleshy type and the hawk type.  The latter can be seen on Barbra Streisand.

There are many other types of noses such as the greek (seen on Cesc Fabregas, the captain of the Arsenal football team) which is only found on 3%.

Daniel Radcliffe, the famous actor, possesses an aquiline nose which Tamir explained represents a sharp, business orientated mind.

Another beautiful nose type is the celestial.  As denoted by the name, this type is a rather angelic and is possessed by about 13% of the population.  The actress Carey Mulligan has this style of nose.

These are the 14 types of noses found by professor Tamir but not everyone holds to his findings.  Some argue that his results were inaccurate as they came from only one area of the world.  To get more conclusive results, they say, he should have looked more international.  Perhaps one day someone will do a worldwide nose investigation.

Stunning Pluto Pictures That Will Amaze You

NASA has released amazing detailed Pluto pictures.

The New Horizons space probe released some of the best images of Pluto the world has seen since December 2015.

With the information gathered from these detailed images of a strip of land on Pluto’s surface called “mosaic strip”, scientists can now piece together what the rest of the dwarf planet looks like.

Photos were taken by New Horizons camera from a diagonal strip stretching across the surface of one side of Pluto.

This picture is called “the mountainous shoreline of Sputnik Planum” and it’s a place where two kinds of ice meet.

The image below is part of a sequence taken by New Horizons’ Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) as the spacecraft passed within 9,550 miles (15,400 kilometers) of Pluto’s surface, just 13 minutes before the time of closest approach.

pluto picturesNasa’s latest Pluto pictures depict an entire day on the dwarf planet. The space agency released a series of 10 close-ups of the frosty, faraway world today, representing one Pluto day, which is equivalent to 6.4 Earth days. The New Horizons spacecraft took the pictures as it zoomed past Pluto in an unprecedented flyby in July. Pluto was between 400,000 and 5 million miles from the camera for these photos

This image of haze layers above Pluto’s limb was taken by the Ralph/Multispectral Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC) on NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft. About 20 haze layers are seen; the layers have been found to typically extend horizontally over hundreds of kilometers, but are not strictly parallel to the surface.

The lack of cratering indicates the mountains are relatively young (probably between 100 and 200 million years old), but no mechanism has been proposed for the formation of such structures on an icy body like Pluto.

Find Out What Your Personality Is by Looking at Your Fingerprint

fingerprint lock screenvia

Dermatoglyphics is the scientific study of fingerprints. Although denounced by many as a pseudo-science, there’s still a lot of believers who would vouch for its legitimacy.

In this post, we will base the readings on the fact that no 2 fingerprints are the same. “There are three main unique things in our body- fingerprints, retina, brain. There is high probability that these three are connected with each other.” Says Quora user, Pranav Naphade.

There are 3 fingerprint patterns that the FBI technicians have identified (loops, swirls/whorls, and curves/arches). Now what does yours say about you?

Fingerprint patterns – Loops

fingerprint lock screenNoel Jaquin, one of the pioneers of palmistry says looped fingerprints are indicative of “mental and emotional elasticity with possible lack of concentration.” The sort of people who have this type of print are open-hearted and generally calm, quick to help others and make friends. Also imaginative and while typically responsible can be hard to push in terms of taking initiative especially with their jobs. But other than that, they are flexible and graceful in nature, not easily swayed by life’s difficulties due to their versatility.

Fingerprint patterns – Swirls

fingerprint lock screenImpassive with an almost impenetrable disposition, people with swirl fingerprints often get viewed as cold or selfish, but in reality, they are merely independent to the highest degree. They are unwavering in their beliefs and often dubbed as a loner in society.

Although people with this type of print are seen as talented, witty, and driven to success, they are also short-tempered and distrusting of others. They are hardworking and can do any job they set their minds to yet often times they give up halfway through the task because of boredom. They are unaware of their insecurity which makes them dissatisfied of other and of themselves.

Fingerprint patterns – Curves

fingerprint lock screenPragmatic, courageous, and reliable, people with curve prints also border on stubbornness. Their unwavering loyalty to their beliefs and friendships cannot be underestimated.

They are confident and energetic, but also have difficulty in adapting to change. Laziness is not a path they should take as it is the first step towards a downward spiral of depression. They are either highly artistic or the exact opposite.
